If you want to shorten the duration and reduce the severity of a cold or flu, or stop it from taking hold altogether, it’s important to act as soon as you feel the slightest symptom. The moment you sense you have picked up a virus, take action immediately. Here are some of the basic methods I use at home.
Herbal Teas: Everyone knows how important it is to stay hydrated, especially when sick. Herbal teas are a great way to give your body the fluids it needs while fighting off an illness. Herbal teas, when properly utilized, are also helpful in alleviating symptoms of a cold or flu, while supporting the immunes system in eliminating that virus. Here are some herbal tea options:
- Purchase a cold/flu care herbal tea blend. Traditional Medicinals has some very nice options, which I highly recommend.
- Make a homemade herbal infusion (See my post on Herbal Infusions). An herbal infusion is not your typical cup of tea. A single teabag is nice, but with an herbal infusion you will obtain a range of vital nutrients naturally found in your herbs of choice, along with many amazing medicinal benefits.Elderflower and red clover tea is my favorite infusion to make at the first sign of a cold or virus. Blend with chamomile or peppermint. I like to add yarrow when there is a fever.
- For the die-hards, make something a bit stronger. Dice a clove of garlic, place it in a mug, and add a sprig of fresh thyme. Fill the mug with hot water, cover the mug, and let it steep for 15-20 minutes. Strain and sweeten with raw honey if desired.
- For nausea, dice a one-inch piece of fresh ginger and follow the directions above to make a ginger tea.
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar : Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is my go-to when surrounded by sniffling, sneezing friends, coworkers, and family. The moment I feel the slightest sense of illness I grab my apple cider vinegar. I prefer to add one tablespoon to my smoothie and that often does the trick. You can also make a lemonade-style drink: You’ll need the juice of 1/4 fresh-squeezed lemon, 1-2 tbs raw apple cider vinegar, and a tbs raw honey. Dissolve the honey in a small amount of hot water first, then fill the glass with cold water, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice.
Take Congaplex, from Standard Process. I recommend Congaplex to all my clients, both children and adults, and I use it at home when my own children are fighting something.
Rest. If at all possible, go directly to bed and stay there until you feel better! Do not overlook this very simple, yet effective, step.
